

A Shelfie chart from December 2015 shows that about 16% of “books on an ‘average’ shelf are from publishers that signed a deal with” for e-books. It only got selected titles from two of the “big five” trade publishers: HarperCollins, typically the most aggressive among the majors in trying new digital business models, and Macmillan. Second, Shelfie’s catalog lacked titles from major publishers.

But it also was a hassle and lowered the value of your print book if you were to resell it. This process helped ensure that multiple people couldn’t use the same print book to get a cheap/free e-book.

First, in order to claim your discounted or free e-book, you had to go through a multi-step process with the Shelfie app: take a picture of a book verify that it correctly recognized the book you photographed sign your name on the copyright page of the print book take a photo of that and send it in then download your e-book.

Assuming that we all will keep better track of our Amazon account in the decades to come than we will of every single paperback we purchased from them, this could be a good way to keep transitioning your physical library to a digital one. Now if you told me that millions of dollars of ebooks are being sold this way, I wouldn’t be surprised either. A lot of books have sharing disabled as well. A good example is book sharing the publisher has to enable the option for you to let your sister-in-law read a book you bought on your own Kindle. As with so many items in the Amazon catalog, you can only do it if the publishers say you can do it. But the price for each one on Kindle was $2.99, a clear savings, and heck, I am not even sure where some of those print books are right now.īut that handful of eligible books tells me that the publishers aren’t crazy about the program.
